How to Run a Portable Generator Safely

A generator can be a lifeline during severe weather, but it also brings serious risks if it isn’t set up safely before a storm hits. Rushing in the dark during an emergency can lead to skipped steps and dangerous mistakes, so advance preparation is essential.

  1. Make sure the generator is rated for the needed outputs: a generator that is underpowered for your power demands may stall or if the generator is overloaded it may trip a circuit.

  2. Do not use a portable generator in your living space: instead set-it up at least 20 feet from your home.

  3. Always direct the generator’s exhaust vent away from your home.

  4. Monitor for Carbon Monoxide: Carbon Monoxide (CO) fumes can be deadly. Fortunately, many portable generators feature a built-in CO detector that triggers automatic shutoff if CO levels become dangerous. As added protection, ensure all living spaces have CO detectors and confirm that they are working.
